When I added a categorized tag thru customize ribbon feature in Outlook 2010 it is greyed out on the ribbon and will not work. Actually, your categories are still there. Starting with Outlook 2007, the Master Category List is stored within the mailbox (pst-file, ost-file or Exchange mailbox Export categories from Microsoft Outlook. All color categories, including defaulted categories and customized categories, can be exported from Microsoft Outlook.
The Upgrade to color categories feature doesn't work in Outlook 2013. Running Upgrade to color categories doesn't upgrade the Master category list.In order that the automatic allocation functions well, set the default Outlook rule ‘Delete category of emails (recommended)’ before all other rules.
